Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner

Full-Time
Owen Sound

Reporting to the Manager of MDRD and Infection Prevention & Control, the Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner uses a team approach to plan, implement and evaluate infection prevention and control functions and works with all disciplines to promote a safe environment for patients, families, employees and visitors. The Practitioner’s primary functions include education, consultation, surveillance, investigation, and the development of policies and procedures; collaborate with the health care team to develop strategies and programs that are best practice and evidence informed; work with external institutions and agencies with respect to infection prevention and control issues.

Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:

Required:

  • Undergraduate Degree or Diploma in health care related field
  • Current registration with a recognized health professional regulatory college
  • Minimum of five years’ professional experience, preferably in a hospital setting
  • Current Certificate of Infection Control (CIC) or willingness to become certified within 2 years of hire
  • Successful completion of an IPAC recognized Infection Control course
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection control best practice
  • Project management experience
  • Effective skills in communication, diplomacy, problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, conflict resolution, management of competing demands
  • Strong computer skills
  • Effective adult teaching skills
  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position including sitting, standing, walking
  • Valid (class G) driver’s license and ability to travel. Reliable and insurable vehicle
  • Self-directed and well-organized
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement
  • Demonstrate professional commitment to currency in all aspects of infection prevention and control and health promotion
  • Able to anticipate unexpected events; local, provincial, national, world-wide with the ability to act on potential outcomes
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays as emergencies occur and situational circumstances require
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records
  • Knowledge of and adherence to GBHS ‘CARE’ Behaviours (Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence)
  • Advocates and supports a culture of patient safety and demonstrates an understanding of how the department service and assigned responsibilities contribute to overall patient safety at GBHS through patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes
