Director of Medicine & Oncology

Owen Sound

The Director of Medicine & Oncology has operational accountability for the development, management, evaluation and improvement of high quality patient care services and support within Emergency, Critical Care, Medicine and Oncology portfolios. The Director provides visionary leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of professionals within the program fostering an environment of learning and individual growth. This role requires a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to build and foster strong and collaborative relationships. An ability to “think outside the box” and acilitate creative thinking and innovative problem solving is an asset. This Director is a systems thinker who looks beyond the issues of today and considers the broader landscape of healthcare over time and across sectors. Other key responsibilities include budget preparation and monitoring, the development of short and long term goals and objectives for the program, implementing corporate goals, and actively participating on a variety of committees and taskforces.

Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:


  • Member of a RHPA e.g. Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor degree in a related field, Masters preferred
  • Experience in clinical management, minimum 3-5 years, proven track record as a health care leader
  • Leadership capabilities with strong interpersonal skills, administrative capabilities and executive presence with pro-active skills in team building, problem solving and decision making
  • Strong project management skills
  • Overall commitment to the quality of patient care and customer service
  • Visionary and creative problem solver, with ability to execute effectively
  • Value-based leadership skills which emphasize creation of strategic vision, innovation, communication, finance, human resource management and development, with demonstrated ability to be a team player
  • Ability to collaborate with other regional healthcare partners and build business relationships with senior executives
  • Progressive management experience
  • Significant experience working with/leading a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in performance improvement using LEAN methodology or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively leading change
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, board of directors, consultants, governments, community groups, medical, general public and all other contacts
  • Effective facilitation, presentation and negotiation skills
  • Strategic thinking, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a positive work environment
  • Ability to use technology including general proficiency in all MS Office components
  • Available for regular assignment of Hospital Administrator On-Call responsibilities (assigned on a rotating basis to cover evenings and weekends)
  • Current driver’s license and availability of a vehicle for travel
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records
  • Knowledge of and adherence to GBHS “CARE” behaviours (Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence) and LEAD (Lead by example, Empower, Achieve results, Develop others)
  • Advocates and supports a culture of patient safety and demonstrates an understanding of how the department service and assigned responsibilities contribute to overall patient safety at GBHS through patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes
