Registered Nurse - Inpatient Mental Health

Owen Sound

Reporting to the Program Manager, Mental Health Services, and the Registered Nurse is a member of a multidisciplinary team.  The RN will provide short term case management to clients referred from inpatient mental health services and/or the Emergency Departments to facilitate stabilization and re-integration in the community.  Supervision for the clinical work is provided within the team by the Program Manager.

Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:


  • Ontario College of Nurses registration
  • Certification in Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing or willingness to obtain
  • 3 years’ experience with Case Management in the Mental Health field
  • Working knowledge of Mental Health Act, Health Care and Consent Act and Substitute Decision Makers Act, Child and Family Services ACT, DSM-V (R) is essential
  • Ability to engage patients using knowledge and skills related to motivational interviewing
  • Ability to engage patients using knowledge and skills related to cognitive behavioural
  • Ability to engage patients using knowledge and skills related to brief solution focused therapies
  • Ability to provide as support, advocacy, and education services to program clients and as needed to their support person(s), primarily in client’s home environment and   when appropriate through office visits
  • Knowledge of community resources in Grey Bruce
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, patient and /or family to develop care planning for patients with complex treatment needs using the Recovery Model
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct psychosocial and psychiatric assessment including a risk assessment
  • Excellent leadership, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates an ability to think critically and respond effectively to emergent situations
  • Plan, develop and conduct inpatient group programs
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and continuing education
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and use of a vehicle to travel
  • CPI training up to date
  • CPR basic certification
  • Satisfactory attendance and performance record
  • Knowledge of and adherence to GBHS ‘CARE’ Behaviours (Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence)
  • Advocates and supports a culture of patient safety and demonstrates an understanding of how the department service and assigned responsibilities contribute to overall patient safety at GBHS through patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes


  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing
