GBHS Working Towards Official Baby Friendly Designation

Baby Friendly

GBHS is working to become the first hospital in the area to be formally designated as “Baby Friendly” by providing a ‘Breast is Best’ philosophy to new mothers.

The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFI) is a global evidenced-based standard of care initiated in 1991. BFI focuses on the role of health services in protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding, and recognizes hospitals that offer an optimal level of care for mothers and babies.  A Baby Friendly hospital promotes breastmilk as the best food for optimal growth for infants, reduces barriers to successful breastfeeding and works to ensure supports are in place for breastfeeding families.

To receive the designation of BFI, hospitals must comply with the “10 Steps of Successful Breastfeeding” developed by the WHO and UNICEF.  These steps include actions for staff, doctors, midwives and volunteers to promote breastfeeding.

In December 2013 GBHS received a “BFI letter of Participation” from the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada.  This Certificate celebrates our achievement as a result of a dedicated team of professionals on the Women and Child Care Unit and the work completed to meet some of the steps to achieving the BFI designation.

Education and awareness of the best ways to promote and support breastfeeding is being conducted throughout GBHS, and will help ensure babies who are born here or come through our doors get the best start in life.
