Retail Pharmacy
Pharmacy Services in Owen Sound supplies a comprehensive retail pharmacy service for the public.

Hours of Service are:
9am until 5pm Monday to Friday

Staff members, recently discharged patients and outpatients all benefit from the retail pharmacy located at the main entrance of the hospital right behind the gift shop. On-line billing is available for most third-party insurance programmes. A small selection of non-prescription drugs is also available for purchase. Payment can be made by Cash, Visa, MasterCard or Debit Withdrawal.

Clinical Pharmacy Services
GBHS Pharmacy Services has a team of pharmacists responsible for monitoring drug therapy of the patients in the hospital. Such monitoring may involve providing drug information and in-service, making timely recommendations in therapy, providing pharmacokinetic "drug level" analysis, patient medication counseling, adverse drug reaction follow-up and prevention, and medication therapy review. Pharmacists play a key role on the multidisciplinary team. They also ensure that medication therapy is consistent upon admission, discharge and transfer in the hospital.

In order to keep up with the rapid changes in drug therapy, our staff members participate in continuing education.

Drug Distribution Services
In the Owen Sound hospital, a skilled team of technicians provides a comprehensive unit-dose drug distribution system. Drugs are packaged in single unit-of-use packages making it the safest medication system available in the world today!

In most cases a 24 hours supply of both oral and IV medication (minibag) is sent to the ward for each patient each day.

In addition, we provide comprehensive specialty IV's including chemotherapy and total Parenteral nutrition (TPN).

This system is backed up by the state-of-the-art integrated hospital computer system, which additionally provides Medication Administration Records (MAR's) for Nursing Staff.

Patient Safety
With a focus on medication safety, the pharmacy has wide and varied systems in place to ensure the safety of our medication systems. All medications written by physicians are screened for allergies, interactions and the appropriate dose range before they are dispensed to the patient care area. All medication dispensed receive a double-check before leaving the department. Pharmacy works to continually improve our processes to ensure that our patients receive the safest medication therapy available.
