Medical Staff

Grey Bruce Health Services operates six hospitals and a withdrawal management service serving 150,000 residents in Grey and Bruce. All six hospitals offer 24/7 emergency care. The Lion's Head, Markdale, Meaford, Southampton and Wiarton hospitals offer inpatient primary care, diagnostic support, palliative care, and a range of ambulatory care services. The Owen Sound hospital acts as the regional referral centre for Grey and Bruce counties with over 50 specialists on staff.

Owen Sound is known for its natural beauty, outstanding arts community and proximity to the Bruce Peninsula with its Fathom Five Underwater National Park. The Park offers some of the best cold water diving in the world and spectacular scenery and hiking trails. Downhill skiing is close by in the Beaver Valley and Blue Mountain. Lake Huron and Georgian Bay offer some of the best beaches, fishing and sailing waters on the Great Lakes.

All the communities served by Grey Bruce Health Services are great locations to build a thriving Family Practice. The Owen Sound hospital offers excellent staff and equipment to support specialty practices. Chief of Staff

Dr. Don Eby

Dr. Don Eby was appointed Grey Bruce Health Services' Chief of Staff, effective October 1, 2004. Dr. Eby has served as GBHS' Chief of Emergency Services and was a family physician in the Markdale community for many years. In addition to his role as Service Chief, Dr. Eby has supported the Base Hospital paramedical program for Grey Bruce and Huron Counties since 1997 and has been a Coroner since 1986.

Deputy Chief of Staff

Dr. Todd Webster

Dr. Todd Webster has been with GBHS as a Urologist since 2004 and was recently appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff, effective September 1, 2008. He also serves as the Chief of the Division of Urology and has embarked on a 2 year fellowship with the CHSRF. His Executive Training for Research Application Intervention Project aims to identify and overcome some of the barriers to implementing CPOE within the organization.

Co-President, Medical Staff - Urban

Dr. Brendan Mulroy

Dr. Mulroy is the Co-President of the Medical Staff representing GBHS physicians practicing in Owen Sound. He has been a member of the Department of Family Medicine at GBHS since 1986 and previously held the position of Chief of Family Medicine from 1996-2000 and again in 2002-2006. Since 2006 Dr. Mulroy has been in the position of Hospitalist for GBHS in Owen Sound and was elected to the position of Co-President of the Medical Staff in September of 2008.

Co-President, Medical Staff - Rural

Dr. Keith Dyke

Dr. Keith Dyke is the Co-President of the Medical Staff representing the GBHS physicians practicing in our rural hospitals. Dr Dyke attended medical school at Memorial University of Newfoundland and completed his family medicine residency at Queens University in Kingston. He has been a family physician practicing in Southampton since 2002. In addition to family medicine Dr Dyke is a consulting physician for a nurse practitioner in Dundalk and another in Southampton. He is also a provincial Coroner and has a methadone practice in Owen Sound. He was elected to the position of Co President of the medical staff in 2006.

Anaesthesia
Dr. Gordon Edwards

A strong department with seven anaesthetists covering six O.R.s a day in Owen Sound, complemented by GP anaesthesia at three of GBHS’ rural hospitals. In addition to its general anaesthetic coverage, the department offers pre-admit, perioperative, acute pain service, chronic pain clinic, critical care support and support to Obstetrics. Call one in six for weekends.

Diagnostic Imaging
Dr. Laura Howlett

The Service offers all imaging modalities including CT, ultrasound, and interventional radiology to manage a very interesting and diverse caseload. GBHS is the sole regional provider of MR, Nuclear Medicine, bone densitometry and acts as the OBSP’s regional Breast Assessment Centre. The radiologists cover six hospitals but do not have to travel. PACS is fully implemented at all six GBHS hospitals and regional hospital network.

Emergency
Dr. Michael Williams

Grey Bruce Health Services – Owen Sound hospital is the regional health centre with multidisciplinary back up on site 24/7 from Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, and Radiology with additional coverage from ENT and Ophthalmology. Diagnostic Imaging, including CT and MRI, and 24-hour labs are accessible.

GBHS also operates 24/7 emergency departments at all of its rural hospitals and provides emergency care during regular office hours at its clinic in Tobermory. Family physicians provide coverage to the rural hospitals and the clinic in Tobermory.

Family Practice
Dr. Bob Marsden - Owen Sound

Each of GBHS six hospitals has a family practice department. The same medical staff group covers both the medical clinic in Tobermory and Lion’s Head. There are independent, group and clinic models of practice across the corporation. In the rural hospitals family physicians provide 24/7 emergency coverage at all hospitals and GP anesthesia in three hospitals. The Owen Sound department includes a small number of family physicians who continue with emergency and obstetrics practices in addition to their office practices and inpatient care.

Dr. Suni Johnson, Chief of Medicine

The Service currently has eight full or part time members. Subspecialties include Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Respirology and Gastroenterology. There is a significant volume of cardiac patients in addition to a varied general internist practice.

Obstetrics / Gynaecology
Dr. Emmanuel Caulley

The Department provides OBS/GYN coverage to all of Grey and Bruce Counties. There are approximately 750 deliveries per year supported by family physicians and midwives. The obstetricians are paid through an APP. Facilities in Owen Sound are excellent. Workload and overhead requirements are less than larger urban centres.

Paediatrics
Dr. Paul Dick

The Department is currently staffed by two full-time and one part-time pediatrician. The Department provides general consultant pediatric service with 24/7 call coverage to the Grey Bruce region. Both full-time pediatricians have academic appointments and are actively involved in supervising clinical clerks and residents. The Department provides support to the Obstetrical Service in Owen Sound which has ~ 750 deliveries per year. There is a Level II Intensive Care Nursery with the capacity to deliver assisted ventilation (CPAP) and TPN. The Department supports routine deliveries to premature infants as early as 32 weeks gestation. The pediatricians also have admitting privileges to the ICU.

The pediatricians office-based practice is referral-based and is serviced through the Ambulatory Pediatric Clinic at the hospital. The Department offers regular Pediatric Diabetes Clinics supported by a CDE-qualified RD and RN, a newly established Asthma Clinic, and a truly unique and comprehensive Pediatric Mood Disorder/ Mental Health Clinic. The pediatricians also provide outreach pediatric services to the communities of Kincardine, Hanover & Walkerton. Physician re-imbursement is attractive and provided by an AFP negotiated with the MOHLTC.

Pathology
Dr. Brian Rudrick

This is a true general pathology practice with a broad range of surgical pathology, hematopathology, cytopathology, as well as medico legal and hospital autopsies. This is a young, three-person department, well supported by the hospital with strong technical and equipment resources. The pathologists provide consultative services to Grey Bruce Health Services and the South Bruce Grey Health Centre (10 hospitals in total).

Psychiatry
Department of Psychiatry

GBHS’ two psychiatrists support the Schedule 1 inpatient service and provide consultation to three community-based multi-agency mental health teams practicing from offices at the Owen Sound hospital. The psychiatrists support the Quick Response Team and a comprehensive range of ambulatory programs including the Crisis Team, Community Outreach Treatment Team, the Assertive Community Treatment Team, Psychogeriatric assessment and treatment, Dual Diagnosis and Aftercare Services. GBHS recently won the Canadian Mental Health Association’s national Best Practice Award. The Ministry of Health has requested a proposal for a child and adolescent program, which is currently under consideration for funding.

Surgery
Dr. Al Lozon

General surgery offers a wide array of surgical cases, with excellent anaesthesia support, first-rate equipment and great ICU back up. There are five general surgeons, five orthopaedic surgeons, three urologists, two otolaryngologists and two opthalmologists in the department. Volume is approximately 11,857 annually at the regional hospital in Owen Sound and a further 2,156 day surgical cases at four of GBHS’ rural hospitals.
