On Thursday, May 12 Grey Bruce Health Services hosted an official opening of the new Cancer Centre at its Owen Sound Regional Hospital. Hospital officials and fundraising volunteers also unveiled a donor recognition wall and thanked the many generous supporters of The Hospital Campaign.
The Hospital Campaign was launched in May, 2014 with a goal of $11.4 million. $11 million has been raised in cash and pledges to date.
The Campaign has also supported the recent purchase of a state of the art CT scanner, a leading edge interventional radiology suite, and a number of other vital improvements at all GBHS hospitals.
“The number of cancer patients we treat has grown significantly in recent years, and we needed to renovate our Cancer unit and purchase new equipment to meet the growing need,” said Lance Thurston, President and CEO of GBHS. “Our donors have come through for the communities we serve, and as a result, we have a wonderful new Cancer Centre purpose-built to provide quality care for patients across Grey and Bruce counties.”
Cancer services have been consolidated onto the 5th floor of the Owen Sound Regional Hospital. The Cancer Centre is home to a dramatically improved chemotherapy treatment area, a comfortable waiting area for patients and families and a dedicated pharmacy.
“As a cancer patient, I know what it’s like to want to get better, and as a physician, I want the tools to be able to give my patients the best care possible,” said Dr. Bob Severs, Anesthesiologist, and former Hospital Campaign volunteer. “This new Cancer Centre is built to suit patient needs, and gives our staff and physicians the facilities and the equipment to improve lives.”
Tony Sheard, a member of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation and Chair of the regional fundraising effort behind the Hospital Campaign, recognized the work and support of Honourary Campaign Chair Duncan Hawthorne, former CEO of Bruce Power, and the leadership donation of Bruce Power in support of the regional Cancer Centre.
A public open house for the Cancer Centre will be held on Tuesday, May 17th, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on the 5th floor of the Owen Sound Regional Hospital. All are welcome. Parking is free.
