Position Precis:

Brightshores Health System operates six hospitals in the Grey Bruce region serving a population of approximately 170,000. Our hospital in Owen Sound is a Level 2 Regional Referral Centre, and the largest of our 6 sites, offering a full range of specialty services with a staff of 1,600 and over 170 physicians working in our hospitals. www.brightshores.ca

All pediatric consultations are based out of the hospital in Owen Sound, the Paediatric Referral Centre for all of Grey and Bruce Counties.  Locum coverage required:

  • Emergency Pediatric Telephone Consults/Advice (EG. Parents of children with Type 1 DM, ER Physicians at Brightshores Rural Sites)
  • ER Pediatric Consultations
  • Level 2B Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (only 32 weeks and above – all intubated or more premature newborns are transferred out via Criti-Call)
  • Adolescent Mental Health
  • All other Pediatric Inpatients on Pediatric Ward and occasionally in Adult ICU

Qualifications:

Independent License to Practice in Ontario

Remuneration:

Daily stipend and travel reimbursement through the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Pediatric Locum program.

About the Paediatrics Department:

The Department is currently staffed by five pediatricians. The Department provides general consultant pediatric service with 24/7 call coverage to the Grey Bruce region. Some pediatricians have academic appointments and are actively involved in supervising clinical clerks and residents. The Department provides support to the Obstetrical Service in Owen Sound which has ~ 750 deliveries per year. There is a Level II Intensive Care Nursery with the capacity to deliver assisted ventilation (CPAP) and TPN. The Department supports routine deliveries to premature infants as early as 32 weeks gestation. The pediatricians also have admitting privileges to the ICU. The pediatricians office-based practice is referral-based and is serviced through the Ambulatory Pediatric Clinic at the hospital. The Department offers regular Pediatric Diabetes Clinics supported by a CDE-qualified RD and RN, a newly established Asthma Clinic, and a truly unique and comprehensive Pediatric Mood Disorder/ Mental Health Clinic. The pediatricians also provide outreach pediatric services to the communities of Kincardine, Hanover & Walkerton.
