Mortality Ratio

The Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) is an important measure that can help support efforts to improve patient safety and quality of care. The HSMR compares the actual number of patient deaths in a hospital with the average Canadian hospital. It is a ratio of the actual deaths to expected deaths. An HSMR equal to 100 suggests that there is no difference between a local mortality rate and the average national experience. An HSMR greater or less than 100 suggests that a local mortality rate is higher or lower than the national experience respectively.
